Flight of the Innocents

This installation of seven suspended sculptures conceptualizes the impact of climate change on women and children forced to flee from homelands impacted by drought and flood.

Fast Fashion's contribution to climate change is undeniable. The industry annually releases 1.2 billion tons of potent greenhouse gases into our atmosphere, representing nearly 10 percent of annual global emissions, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined (The World Resources Institute).  Add to that, the dyes and other chemicals used during the production of Fast Fashion clothing that are dumped into rivers and oceans.

Each of these Innocents began with the purchase of an abandoned vintage baby dress acquired from “Who Gives A Scrap,” whose mission is to divert goods from our landfills. As you wander the installation, consider that each dress comes with a past...a human child lived and breathed inside that fabric.
